Cultural Anthropologist
Paper (50 pts)
For the final paper, you will write a review of a peer-reviewed journal article on a topic of interest from an anthropological frame/perspective, and provide a biography/background on the cultural anthropologist who conducted that research.
The organization of the paper should in general adhere to the following –
Primary components:
Title
Introduction (5 pts)
Background and overview of your topic and why it’s important; orientation to the scale and scope of the issue (using statistics, vignettes, etc. if relevant)
The name and brief bio (sentence or two) of the cultural anthropologist
Roadmap paragraph – where is this paper going (“In this paper, I describe…”)
Article Review (15 pts)
Must include: principal themes or arguments presented in the article, linked with supportive evidence (give an example of the evidence they provide to make an argument/claim
Can include: strengths of the article, weaknesses of the article, areas of confusion, etc.
Your personal reflection of the article – what do you find most interesting? Challenging? Innovative?
Cultural Anthropologist biography (15 pts)
Include details like name, institutional affiliation, educational background, topical areas of focus/interest (politics, economics, medicine/health, etc.), regional/geographical areas of study (East Africa, Caribbean, etc.), etc.
Details you may have found from interviews, videos, the article or other articles, or public work –including things like: what drew them to anthropology? Why did they become interested in their research? Why do they work in a particular geographical location(s)? Do they primarily work in applied or practicing contexts, or in an academic institution?
