The theories of learning are framework concepts that describe knowledge acquisition, absorption, processing and retention during the learning process (Simandan, 2013). According to Godlewska (2013), factors like experience,environment, emotion and cognitive influences play a role in learning skills acquisition and retention. There are four main approaches of learning including experiential approach which was put forward by David Kolb in 1984 (Kolb 2014), behavioural approach, the humanist approach and the cognitive approach. Behavioural type of learning is focussed on learners reacting to specific forms of motivation or stimuli cognitive approach focusses on knowledge retention capacity, while humanist approach bases on explanations of the experience of an individual. Experiential approach simply focuses on knowledge transfer through experience. This essay analyses David Kolb’s Theory of experiential learning through the four cycles, and afterwards discusses how this theory compares and contrasts with the Cognitive approach of learning.
