SOLUTION

In this socially complex world, social stratification takes on new meanings when analyzed and examined from different sociological perspectives. For instance, conflict theorists are very critical of the social stratification, often times claiming that it only benefits certain individuals. On the other hand, symbolic interactionists try to utilize everyday interaction of individuals to explain how the society works. Functionalism, however, examines the society in parts, showing how different parts of the society exists because they serve a certain purpose to the whole society. In one of the most revered classic documentaries by James Ronald Whitney, Just Melvin, Just Evil, clearly brings out all of these perspectives.

Conflict Theory

            This theory explicates that the society is in constant conflict due to competition for the limited resources of the world. In the documentary, it is clear that resources, power, and status are unevenly distributed – giving one individual power over the others. Melvin, who is a well-established mechanic, is the breadwinner of the house. With this, he has the power to order his wives and children to do his bidding. Furthermore, knowing that his children did not have money, he could offer them the same in exchange for his sexual satisfaction.

Symbolic Interactionism

            Symbolic interactionism, simply put, assumes that individuals respond to their environment according to the subjective meanings created and maintained through social interactions with other people. For this reason, society is created through the repeated actions and interaction of individuals. This is immensely brought out in the character of Whitney’s Uncle Jim, who is also violent and proposes to live with two of his half sisters as his wives. As a matter of fact, he alludes to the fact that many people sleep with their daughters and it is no problem. This reiterates symbolic interactionism as he learns this, as he tirades about, from what he observes other people doing.

Functionalism

            This theory explains that all social aspects of the society serves a purpose and are all vital for the long-term survival of the society at large. By all means, this theory insinuates that everything happens for a reason and for the future well-being of the society. For instance, this film depicts the story of one family that is heavily molested, showing how this affects them in the long run. While many might wonder what good this serves the society, it is important to note that – as Whitney illustrates in the beginning of the film – this not only affects one family but millions of them all around the world. Worst of all, many go unpunished and unknown to the world. Sharing this captivating and sad story of this family could inspire others who might have gone through the same to rise and speak about them in order to avoid the same ending.

Conclusion

            This film was very emotional, stirring up a number of feelings in me as I watched it. First, I felt angry at Melvin for what he did to children, some as young as two-years-old. I was even more angry when Uncle Jim wanted to do the same with his sisters, not seeing any wrong thing with what he wanted. I was also very sympathetic with the family members who were molested and even to the wives of Just, who had to endure the pain of their children being molested by their husband. I was honestly glad when Just died and felt like it was more like the moral to the story.
