Go to your general thoughts on it, and kind of get into the meat of this movie. And this is all sort of centered around the reading. Although it’s kind of tried to capture different aspects. This idea of double consciousness, and we’re going to explore some of the central dualities of the film.

1. John Dewey identified the effect of society on one’s moral code and suggested that morality is social. In the movies we have watched so far, do you think that they show individuals rising above their social conditions in response to an independent morality? Or are they further examples of how morality is an element of society? Your response must include references to the reading by Dewey and at least (2) movies we have watched.

2. Honor plays a role in all three movies we watched one way or the other. What are these roles, negative? Positive? Neutral? How do these roles relate to Aristotle’s dismissal of “the life of honor”? Explain your own position on honor and what kind of role you think it should play in life.

3. Death is a natural component of life, but reactions to death differ vastly. In the films “Ikiru” and “Taste of Cherry”, compare and contrast the character’s views on death. In your own mind, do you think that either character have a “good” reaction to dying? Should one consider death to be bad or good (or something in-between)?
