SAMPLE SOLUTION
The sociological imagination (SI) template is applied in this personal reflection essay to examine my feelings, behaviors and thoughts pertaining my experiences, knowledge and observations as far as the issue of medicalization of health is concerned. Sociological analysis that uses SI template focuses on four sociological factors, which includes historical, cultural, structural and critical factors. These factors are interrelated in one way or the other. Historical factors comprise of family background, past experiences and events that shapes the person or a health issue. Cultural factors comprise of traditions, people’s cultures, and belief systems that may influence behaviors, perceptions, and health care outcomes. Structural factors include the influence of different social institution on health and the individual (Germov, 2014).
I grew in up in an environment and family setting that could easily access and use over the counter medications. Common over the counter medications that I was exposed to by my parents during the early childhood years included a number of sleep inducers, painkillers, deworming agents and painkillers. This seemed to have influenced me at my adolescent and early adulthood years since I had memorized drug names that I could go for whenever I experience headache and other simple symptoms.
I usually observe the similar trend of medication trend common among my medication abuse and self-medication behaviors and attitudes among my friends and peers. At the time before, I received significant education and information about the problem of self-medicalization and medicinal misuse, I often saw it as normal and a good strategy for treating conditions that to me required no medical intervention. But now, I think and view self-medicalization that could lead to medical abuse as a significant health issue.
