Dr. Jeffrey Wigand was born in New York in the year 1942. He worked for Brown and Williamson (B & W) as the research and development vice president. He was ostensibly hired to develop reduced-harm cigarettes. But six years later after joining the B & W, Wigand discovered one of the darkest and deepest secrets in the tobacco industry (Lyman, 1999). Tobacco manufacturers intentionally laced their products with flavors and additives that caused cancer (Karnani, 2010). Despite numerous financial offers and other incentives that were offered to influence his decision to remain silent he still went ahead and created awareness on the dangers of the additives and also the increase in the deaths of smokers (Salter, 2002). Wigand was dismissed from his job and his family also deserted him His salary reduced from $300,000 per annum to $30,000 (Salter, 2002).

Despite all these troubles Wigand remained focused on his role as a whistle blower and his resolve to stand by the truth could not be shaken by anything. He turned down many offers and benefits that were made to entice him back to his former position and to look the other way, but his integrity moral uprightness could not allow him (Carden & Boyd, 2010).
